Global Methane Initiative (GMI)

Canada will be co-hosting the third Global Methane Initiative (GMI) Partnership Expo, in collaboration with the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) in 2013, click here for more information.

The Global Methane initiative (GMI) is a voluntary initiative that serves as an international framework to promote cost-effective methane recovery and use as a clean energy source. As of October 2011, there were 41 partner countries in GMI, with additional countries applying to join and over 500 project network members. Canada has been a member of GMI since its inception in 2005. GMI's efforts are focused in five key areas: oil and gas systems; landfills; agriculture and coal.

Canada’s involvement

Canada joined the GMI in 2005 and is an active member in the Partnership. Canada is co-chairing the oil and gas subcommittee, participate actively in the landfill and agriculture sub-committees and will participate in the newly created wastewater subcommittee.

Since 2005, the Government of Canada has invested close to $7.8M in projects to reduce and abate methane emissions in developing countries. This investment was matched by more than $12M in contributions from other public and private sector partners. These projects include a wide range of activities, and have provided a platform to collaborate with other GMI member countries. Specifically, activities are designed to help reduce fugitive methane emissions in the oil and gas sector in China, Mexico and Colombia; and to address methane from landfills in Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

In addition to its participation in the GMI, Canada is contributing to other global initiatives designed to reduce methane emissions. These include:

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCP),

The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves
