Renewable Energy and Distributed Generation Task Force

Governance

Chair: Canada

Co-Chair: Australia

Photovoltaic (solar) arrayThe seven Partner countries account for 39% of global renewable energy electric power generation. As of 2005, APP member countries generated 146.27 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy derived from geothermal, solar, wind and wood and waste. Total primary energy consumption of renewable energy for each APP Partner country is: Australia (2.5%), Canada (1.9%), China (7%), India (4%), Japan (1.7%), Korea (2.1%) and United States (11%). Each Partner country has established aggressive renewable energy policies and standards which will assist the growth of this sector for decades to come.

Renewable energy and distributed generation technologies will be critical for all seven Partner countries to realize the goals of energy access, energy security, poverty alleviation, and mitigation of the economic and social effects of increasing fossil fuel prices. The Task Force is working to promote renewable energy technologies, such as hydro, solar, geothermal and wind, which generate virtually zero emissions. It is seeking to advance distributed generation as a model that can significantly reduce emissions and promote greater cost efficiencies, while responding to the demographics of energy poverty, thereby increasing access to modern energy services. To achieve these objectives, the Task Force will strive to identify barriers to technology transfer and financing associated with deployment of these technologies, focusing on those that are cost competitive with both on and off-grid applications.
