Cleaner Fossil Energy Task Force

Governance

Chair: Australia

Co-Chair: China

Oil extraction siteIn aggregate, Partner countries account for 54% of global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel consumption. As of 2005, the overall division of energy sources for Partner countries was the following: petroleum consumption (48% of world total), natural gas consumption (32% of world total), and coal consumption (69% of world total).

The Cleaner Fossil Energy Task Force recognizes that coal, oil and gas are and will remain critical fuels for all seven Partner economies. Against a background of increasing energy demand in the Asia-Pacific region, there is a need to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of fossil fuel use. Significant opportunities exist today to achieve efficiencies and performance improvements in the stationary use of coal, oil and gas. The development and deployment of lower emissions technologies will be key in delivering clean development and climate outcomes associated with fossil fuel use.
