Canada will host a meeting of the Cleaner Fossil Energy Task Force as well as a Wind Power Generation Experts' Workshop in Montréal, Québec from September 13 - 15, 2010. The meeting and workshop will be held on the margins of the World Energy Congress (WEC).
Canada will host a meeting of the Coal Mining Task Force in Whistler, British Columbia from September 14-16, 2010. The meeting will be held on the margins of the 48th Canadian Conference on Coal.
Speaking to the Canada China Business Council on December 4, 2009, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced that Canada is investing in 19 new clean technology projects under the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, representing an investment of $8.4 million over two years. These projects include the design of green buildings for communities, research in solar and wind power, and the recovery of gas from landfills. The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) is a public-private partnership of seven countries – Canada, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the United States – that seeks to accelerate the development, deployment and diffusion of clean energy technologies.
APP partners have agreed to work together and with private sector partners to meet goals for energy security, national air pollution reduction, and climate change in ways that promote sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction.
The Partnership focuses on expanding investment and trade in cleaner energy technologies, goods and services in key energy-intensive and energy supply sectors that offer the greatest potential to address climate change and air pollution challenges. The APP's work is conducted through eight public-private sector task forces covering:
As of May 2010, 175 projects and 22 flagship projects have been endorsed by the APP. Flagship projects comprise a portfolio of projects and activities that, collectively, exemplify the vision and objectives of the Partnership. Please visit the APP Project Roster to read a summary of these projects and activities.
Canada joined the APP in October 2007 and since then has been an active member in the Partnership, including all its eight Task Forces and its governing body, the APP Policy and Implementation Committee.
Since Canada joined the APP, the Government has invested a total of $11.75M in 28 APP projects, which have leveraged more than $77M in investments. A first funding round was announced by the Minister of the Environment on June 18, 2009, and a second funding round was announced by the Prime Minister on December 4, 2009. These projects provide a platform to showcase Canadian innovation in countries like China, India, Japan, Korea, and the U.S., and will contribute to reducing GHGs, providing economic benefits to Canadians, and accelerating the development of clean technologies.
Canada’s participation in the APP supports its domestic, continental and international efforts to address climate change, including the target Canada inscribed in the Copenhagen Accord to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent from 2005 levels by 2020.
Bringing industry and government together on climate change
The Government of Canada continues to provide strong support for the efforts of industry and other levels of government to develop and deploy more energy-efficient and climate-friendly technologies and industrial processes.
The Partnership employs a cooperative, international public-private partnership model that brings together the private sector, governments and research institutions to address climate change and air pollutionchallenges. The APP enhances existing bilateral and multilateral initiatives and offers an unprecedented opportunity for private sector stakeholders to contribute as an equal partner in the global climate change discussion.
The APP is helping to develop clean energy technologies and spread the adoption of clean energy among Asia-Pacific countries. The seven partner countries collectively represent approximately 45 percent of the world's population, 49 percent of GDP, 50 percent of global emissions of CO2 from combustion sources and they produce approximately 65 percent of the world's coal, 62 percent of the world's cement, 52 percent of world's aluminum, and more than 60 percent of the world's steel.
