Canada will be hosting seven APP Task Force meetings in 2010, four of which will be hosted during the week of March 21-27, 2010, in Vancouver, on the margins of the GLOBE 2010 Biennial Trade Fair & Conference on Business & the Environment. More details will be available soon.
The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) is a public-private partnership of seven countries -- Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the United States -- that seeks to accelerate the development, deployment and diffusion of clean energy technologies.
APP partners have agreed to work together and with private sector partners to meet goals for energy security, national air pollution reduction, and climate change in ways that promote sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction.
The Partnership focuses on expanding investment and trade in cleaner energy technologies, goods and services in key energy-intensive and energy supply sectors that offer the greatest potential to address climate change and air pollution challenges. APP's work is conducted through eight public-private sector task forces covering:
As of June 2009, 140 projects have been endorsed by the APP. Please visit the APP Project Roster to read a summary of these projects and activities.
The Partnership employs a cooperative, international public-private partnership model that brings together the private sector, governments and research institutions to address climate change and air pollution challenges. The APP enhances existing bilateral and multilateral initiatives and offers an unprecedented opportunity for private sector stakeholders to contribute as an equal partner in the global climate change discussion.
The Government of Canada's $20 million commitment to the APP coupled with private sector investment will contribute to the international effort to accelerate the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies.
The APP is helping to develop clean energy technologies and spread the adoption of clean energy among Asia-Pacific countries. The seven partner countries collectively represent approximately 45% of the world's population, 49% of GDP, 50% of global emissions of CO2 from combustion sources and they produce approximately 65% of the world's coal, 62% of the world's cement, 52% of world's aluminum, and more than 60% of the world's steel.
